After a hiatus, it's perhaps time for another Let's Talk Bookish post courtesy of Book Nook Bits and Dinipanda Reads, and today's topic is pride month reading.
Here's the further prompts for today's discussion.
Happy Pride! π³️π What are your favourite books with LGBTQIA+ representation? Are there authors or series you always recommend? What books are on your Pride Month TBR? What do you think makes representation feel genuine?
My all-time favourite book with LGBTQIA+ representation is probably Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, as I've got a weak spot for proper gothic stories. While there's plenty of well-written books out there, I often recommend Kalynn Bayron books for those who love fantasy, such as This Poison Heart and Cinderella Is Dead. She also wrotes some horror books, which makes my spooky soul really happy.
I don't have that many suitable books on my TBR this month, aside from Hungerstone by Kat Dunn, The Gods of Tango by Carolina de Robertis, and Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart, but I'm unsure if I'll get to them or not.
Regardless of whether it's LGBTQIA+ representation or other marginalised groups, I think that making representation feel genuine, it's important to NOT make them one-dimensional caricatures and add a bunch of stereotypes. Also, it's nice when it's just a small part of who they are. For instance, in You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron, Charity and Bezi was in a same-sex relationship, but the author didn't make a fuss over them being same sex-relationship. As a bi person myself, I can confirm there's more to us than who we happen to be in a relationship with. Some of us may belong to an alphabet soup of some kind, but it's not our entire personality.
