Book Review; Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie

Earlier this year, I read the historical novel Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie and today I'll post my review of the book.

Description from Goodreads
In this enchanting tale about the magic of reading and the wonder of romantic awakening, two hapless city boys are exiled to a remote mountain village for reeducation during China's infamous Cultural Revolution. There they meet the daughter of the local tailor and discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation. As they flirt with the seamstress and secretly devour these banned works, they find transit from their grim surroundings to worlds they never imagined.

My Thoughts on the Book
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is in a way, a charming book about how books can change lives, even during harsh conditions. The sad thing though, I felt the was rather underdeveloped, especially when it came to the characters, and in general I wish the book was a bit longer, with more descriptions, showcasing The Cultural Revolution a lot more and how it impacted the characters, and so on. I also felt The Little Seamstress was more of an object rather than an actual character, which is a shame. The book had great potential though.
