It's Friday, which means it's probably time for yet another Let's Talk Bookish post courtesy of Book Nook Bits and Dinipanda Reads and today's topic is novels in verse.
Here's the further prompts for today's discussion.
Have you read any novels in verse? Do you think novels in verse can be more emotionally powerful compared to regular prose, or do you think novels in verse are more difficult to connect with? What kind of stories do you think work best in verse (i.e. coming-of-age, grief, romance, historical fiction, etc.)? What are your favourite novels in verse?
I've read a small handful of novels in verse over the years, but not that many. That said, if the author is skilled enough, and with the right story, I think novels in verse can be more emotionally powerful if done right. That said, I'm unsure how well sci-fi and fantasy (with their subgenres) would work as novels in verse, but some genres like contemporary, historical fiction, or literary fiction would work better.
Two novels in verse that I've read, enjoyed and would highly recommend are "Silver People: Voices from the Panama Canal" and "Jazz Owls: A Novel of the Zoot Suit Riot", both written by Margarita Engle.
