It's Friday again, which means it's probably time for yet another Let's Talk Bookish post courtesy of Book Nook Bits and Dinipanda Reads, and today's topic is reading for the season you're in.
Here's the further prompts for today's discussion.
Do you prefer reading about characters who are in a similar life stage as you (age, career, relationships, etc.)? Has your preference changed as you’ve gotten older? Have you ever re-read a book and experienced it completely differently because you were in a different stage of life? Do you think books come into our lives at the ‘right time’ and are there any books you think you’d feel differently about if you were younger or older?
When I was at middle grade and young adult age-range, I struggled reading books in those ranges, as I often felt they were a bit too boring/lame for my taste (anyone remembering Sweet Valley High?), but I did enjoy the Goosebumps series by R. L Stine though, and Harry Potter before J. K. Rowling showed her true colours when it came to her transphobic attitudes.
Nowadays, as I'm in my late 30's, I do struggle reading YA as I get frustrated by the teenage drama, so I'm obviously too old for such books now. Fortunately I've enjoyed regular adult books since I was a teenager and I still love reading them. I don't think too much about the age of the adult protagonists in the books I read, but rather focus on the story itself.
Sometimes there's a bit of the right book at the right time, considering maturity and everything, as I now struggle reading what I jokingly call cheesy romance novels. Maybe it's a bit me not wanting the godamn drama and please don't even get me started on the miscommunication-trope (just talk to each other, damn it!). I do suspect that some books are better when we're a bit older/have some maturity and life experience though, as we can appreciate them at bit more.
