It's Friday, which means it's time for another Let's Talk Bookish post courtesy of Book Nook Bits and Dinipanda Reads and today's topic is romance novels.
Here's the further prompts for today's discussion.
It’s almost Valentine’s Day, which means that the most popular book genre is bigger than ever! Do you like to read romance novels? Do you prefer to read just romantic subplots, or to avoid romance altogether? Why do you think romance is such a popular genre? Do you have favorite romance tropes? Who are your favorite fictional couples? What romance novels do you always recommend?
I have to admit I'm one of those who struggle reading the vast majority of romance novels as so many of them are so poorly written and/or cheesy I almost feel my brain is rotting while I'm reading them. I'm occasionally fine with romance as a sub-plot if it's well written though, but overall I try to avoid romance as I'm so fed up.
I can see why some people enjoy reading romance, as it's a bit of an escape, with the added bonus if the bloke in the story treats the female love interest in a good way (there's plenty of arseholes in real life after all).
Of the few romance novels I can handle, The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan is okay as it's set in the Scottish Highlands and a rather bookish read overall. If I remember correctly, even the small coastal village of Burghead was mentioned in the book, but I might be mistaken.
And of course, one can't go wrong with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. It's after all a classic novel for a reason.
