It's Friday and perhaps it's time for a Book Blogger Hop post courtesy of Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer and today's topic is "do you keep up with the hype surrounding books?".
I'm honestly one of those who is occasionally a bit wary if a book is hyped, as it's quite often a bit of is the book hyped because it's good or is it hyped because "everyone" is talking about it for whatever reason? Hyped doesn't always equals good.
Don't get me wrong, some books deserve their hype, but I dare say the well-written hidden gems deserve more praise than the poorly written hyped ones. Whenever I do read one of those so-called hyped books, I read it because it sounds like an interesting read. I don't pick it up "just because" it's hyped, and on this blog, I do review a mix of hyped/popular books, classics, as well as underrated books that deserve more recognition.
Another aspect is that due to the hype of the hype books, I get a bit numb and uninterested at times, especially when I see the same hyped books get talked about over and over again, that I in a lot of cases turn to backlist books and/or hidden gems. After all, a lot of the times, those hidden gems deserve to be more highlighted.
I like to know what’s trending — I’m a blogger, so I see the waves of “you have to read this now” — but I don’t let it run my TBR.

ReplyDeleteI love to see what people are reading, but like you, if I don't like the sound of it then I won't read it just because it's hyped.
