A while ago, I ended up reading the classic novel Story of O by Pauline Réage and today I'll post my review of the book.
Description from Goodreads
The Story of O relates the progressive willful debasement of a young and beautiful Parisian fashion photographer, O, who wants nothing more than to be a slave to her lover, René. The test is severe—sexual in method, psychological in substance… The artistic interest here has precisely to do with the use not only of erotic materials but also erotic methods, the deliberate stimulation of the reader as a part of and means to a total, authentic literary experience. My Thoughts on the Book
I actually quite enjoyed reading The Story of O, in part as it shows how a HEALTHY BDSM relationship should look like. There's after all a huge difference between being submissive as a person and submissive as a sexual preference, and O is after all a successful career woman.
It's overall well-written with a plot that has a few twists and turns, some complex and three-dimensional characters (of the important ones at least), and I totally get why it's considered a classic. Some of the choices O makes could be shocking for some, but those are hers to make.
This is how erotica, and especially BDSM erotica should be written, not the "Fifty Shades of Poorly Written Fan-Fiction" stuff that's been popular in the last 15 years or so, and I'm honestly surprised not more people have read The Story of O.
